PINKERTON, George Alva -- George Alva PINKERTON, 73, of Red Lodge, Mont., died Monday, Dec, 29, 2008, at home.
A memorial service and burial will take place in Greenfield in the spring. Cremation has taken place.

Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge, Mont., assisted with the arrangements.
Mr. PINKERTON was born Dec. 15, 1935, at the family home in Greenfield, the son of Robert B. and Melissa COLEMAN PINKERTON.
Mr. PINKERTON graduated from Parsons College. He worked in journalism for 40 years at seven different newspapers. He began in Muscatine before moving to Billings, Mont., to become an editor and later a managing editor of the Billings Gazette. In 1976, he moved to Lansing, Mich., to become managing editor of the Lansing State Journal. His journalism career took him to New Mexico, then southern California before he returned to Mason, Mich., where he came out of retirement to edit the local weekly.
Mr. PINKERTON had deep faith in God. He coached, wrote about and loved sports. He enjoyed reading, singing gospel and country music, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years Marjorie; five children, Faith of Mason, Mich., Tim and wife Melody of Mason, Mich., Hope and husband Kenny of Red Lodge, Mont., Nathan of Des Moines and Ben and wife Kumiko of Okayama, Japan; one grandchild; two brothers, Robert B. PINKERTON of Altoona and Richard C. PINKERTON of West Des Moines; and three sisters, Minnie Lou LEEPS, Mary Lee PINKERTON and Anna Mae RICHARDS, all of West Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
