Doris was born on October 9, 1922 in Fairfield, IA, the older of two children born to Robina (CURRY) and Dwight HESTON, rural Libertyville, IA.

She and her brother Donald attended the one room schoolhouse a short distance from their home where her love for education began a long illustrious career as an elementary school teacher, following in her mother's footsteps. Her love and devotion for children was tested and proved in one-room schools and city schoolrooms of Agency, Sigourney, Keota, and Ottumwa. Her early years of teaching prepared her for a ready-made family when she married Rex. T. MORRISON of Fort Madison, IA after he lost his wife, Frances, pregnant with their third child. Rex and Doris were married a year later on July 3, 1947 at Iowa City. Soon the happy couple was joined by Rex's two surviving children, Janet, age 5, and Jon, age 3, to become a new family.

After being a great stay-at-home mother and teacher to Janet and Jon for four years, she resumed her teaching career at How Elementary when the family moved to Des Moines, IA. Her great heart of compassion for the needy inspired her to sew clothing for many of her students and family members while going to school at Drake University to upgrade her teaching qualifications from her Manual Training teaching certificate to a full Bachelor's degree in elementary education.

Many weekends and summers required sacrifices for classes and study, all the while attending to the newest member of the family, our baby Robina Mae MORRISON, born January 4, 1960. With all these family and professional duties, she still graduated in 1962 from Drake University whle son Jon graduated from Des Moines Roosevelt. In 1963, Rex, she and Robin moved to Rockaway, NJ, where she resumed her final teaching years at Washington Elementary school before retiring in 1983. She was an outstanding remedial reading teacher and first grade teacher, specializing in helping multitudes of underachievers and learning-disabled to greatly succeed.

Doris is survived by her children and their families: Oldest daughter, Janet WICKETT and her husband Ken of Prairie City, IA, son Jon MORRISON and his wife Ann of Mahomet, IL, and youngest daughter Robina MICHAELS-JOHNSON of Tulsa, OK. Doris has six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her brother, Donald HESTON. Her husband Rex, predeceased her on his 89th birthday, December 29, 2007, as did her infant son, Chris Kent, in 1950.

Doris will always be remembered by family, friends and students for her tireless devotion to her Lord by serving and blessing others with every talent she possessed. Her devotion to family as wife and mother is her hallmark.

Her love of life and living and helping the least to achieve the most were the purity of her character for that hallmark. Her tender compassion for the hurting and needy was always outstandingly exemplary. Her tireless, unselfish giving of the Lord's Love will remain her everlasting tribute and inspiration to all others through her beloved Jesus.

Her family and friends will greatly miss her physical presence, but the presents of her memory are everlasting gifts of love, forever fixed in our hearts with thanksgiving to God, their author. We all greatly rejoice that even during her walk through the valley of the shadow of death where Alzheimer's disease often robbed her of our recognition, the mere mention of Jesus' name always brought a temporary smile as she continued to trust and love His name.

Now that smile is her permanent adorning countenance in the disease-free presence of His eternal Peace and Joy! It was her fervent wish and prayer that each of us join with her in this great Celebration of Life through Jesus Christ. So, please, accept our warmest invitation to join us in our Celebration of His Christmas Gift to Doris of Eternal Life! He has greatly honored her, so let us greatly honor Him!
