MARSHALL, Willie A. -- Willie A. MARSHALL, 76, of Brighton, died early today, Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Arrangements are pending at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.

MARSHALL, W. A. 'Willie' -- W.A. "Willie" MARSHALL, 76, of Brighton, died early Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Church of God in Brighton, with the Rev. Ryan Meader officiating. Burial, with military honors by American Legion Post No. 29 of Washington, will be in Sandy Hook Cemetery, north of Brighton.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton, with the family present from 7-8:30 p.m. and a Masonic service at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials have been established for the Brighton Volunteer Fire Department and Brighton Volunteer First Responders.

Mr. MARSHALL was born Oct. 23, 1932, in Midland City, Ala., the son of Raymond E. and Dora Lee JENKINS MARSHALL. He married Hazel Ione SNIDER Feb. 17, 1965. She died Dec. 8, 1999.

Mr. MARSHALL grew up in Midland City and Gordon, Ala., and attended high school at Ashford, Ala. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served aboard the U.S.S. Apache during the Korean War.

Mr. MARSHALL worked as a bridge construction foreman for Iowa Bridge and Culvert for many years and retired in 1995.

He was a member of Naaman Lodge No. 613 AF & AM in Brighton.

Survivors include four sons, Melvin RICH and wife Cathy, Ron RICH and wife Cathy and Mike RICH and wife Sue, all of Brighton, and Drew MARSHALL of Washington; three daughters, Linda VanderWEIDE and husband Terry of Brighton, Laura MESSER of Kansas City, Kan., and Karen CORMAN of Ainsworth; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ed MARSHALL of Cowarts, Ala., and Bill MARSHALL and Joe MARSHALL, both of Gordon, Ala.; one sister, Becky LEWIS of Musselle, Ga.; and special friend, Betty EYESTONE of Washington, Iowa.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles E. MARSHALL.
