Charlotte Jean STEELE was born September 27, 1921 near Fairfield, IA to Floyd Amil and Eva Margaret (ANDERSON) BOWER. She graduated from Fairfield High School with the Class of 1939. Charlotte attended Parsons College in Fairfield and later earned her BS in Education from Truman State College in Kirksville, MO.

She married Charles D. BROWN in April, 1944, and later separated. Of that union, there were four children: Barbara Jean, Sharon Kay, Steven Charles and Brenda Mae. In 1964, she married Francis Hubert (Herb) STEELE, now deceased.

Charlotte taught many years in rural schools in Wapello, Jefferson and Van Buren counties. In 1964, she became one of the first Special Education teachers in Van Buren county, teaching in the Bonaparte Center until 1967; and then transferring to Davis County Schools, teaching in Bloomfield and Pulaski centers. She was a Special Olympics coach for many students. Charlotte retired from teaching in 1983 and returned to live in the family home at 305 E. Kirkwood, Fairfield.

Charlotte was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairfield, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Retired Teachers Association, a lifetime member of the Iowa State Education Association, and a member-volunteer for The Arc.

Survivors include three children: Sharon (James) COFFIN of Fairfield, Steven (Roxie) BROWN, Sr. of Laredo, MO, Brenda (Don) BOZARTH of Graceville, FL, and seven grandchildren: Tina BARCUS (Russell) SPENCER of Bedford, KY, Toni BARCUS and Macayla COFFIN of Fairfield, IA, Steven (Heidi) BROWN, Jr. and Angela BROWN of Laredo, MO, and Dylan and Jared BOZARTH of Graceville, FL; nine great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. Charlotte is also survived by two sisters, Kathryn ALLENDER and Frances (Henry) ROLAND of Fairfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Barbara Jean (Floyd) BARCUS, and long time companion Fred STOLP, two brothers Lester, and John who was killed in World War II.

Charlotte was a very caring and loving person, always helping her family and friends whenever there was a need. She will be greatly missed, however, we revel in the fact that she is free of pain and now resting in peace with the Lord.
