GIRE, Robert G. -- Robert G. GIRE, 67, of Douds, died in an industrial accident at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at Douds Stone Inc. rock quarry in rural Hedrick.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds.

GIRE, Robert G. -- Robert G. GIRE, 67, of Douds, died at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, in an industrial accident at Douds Stone Inc. rock mine in rural Hedrick.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, with the Rev. Ann Donat, the Rev. Phil Campbell and the Rev. David Albert officiating. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery north of Douds, with military rites by American Legion John Hyson Reneker Post No. 494 of Douds.

Open visitation will begin at noon Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, where the family will be present from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Memorial to Christ United Methodist Church or Douds Community Club may be left at the funeral home or church or may be mailed to the family at PO Box 173, Douds 52551.

Mr. GIRE was born July 28, 1941, in Kilbourn, the son of Emery R. and Marie HUISMAN GIRE. He married Sandra K. BALMER Dec. 28, 1968, in Stockport.

Mr. GIRE graduated from Douds High School in 1960. He lived his life in the Douds community and was a maintenance supervisor for Douds Stone Inc., his lifelong employer.

Mr. GIRE served in the United States Army in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of John Hyson Reneker Post No. 494. He was a longtime member and former chief of the Douds Fire Department. He was active in Douds Field Day and Douds Community Club.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Lorra GIRE of Ottumwa, Lisa HALL of Altoona and Nichole DENNIS of Mount Pleasant; one son, Arthur GIRE of Douds; five grandchildren; and one brother, William GIRE of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, John LAUGHLIN; and one brother, Stanley 'Bud' GIRE.

Man killed in quarry accident

HEDRICK -- A 67-year-old Douds man died in an industrial accident Monday afternoon at the Douds Stone Quarry near Hedrick.

According to information released late Wednesday afternoon by the Keokuk County Sheriff's Department, Robert GIRE was run over by an endloader.

The Keokuk County Sheriff's Department news release states that at about 3:32 p.m. Monday, the department received a 911 call from Douds Stone Quarry, 30213 150th St., Hedrick, requesting medical assistance for a worker who had been run over by an endloader, and an ambulance, area rescue teams and an officer were dispatched to the scene, while air care was placed on standby.

The news release states the Keokuk County medical examiner pronounced GIRE dead at the scene.

GIRE was a maintenance supervisor for Douds Stone Inc. and had worked there his entire career.

The funeral is set for 11 a.m. Friday at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, with burial in Mount Moriah Cemetery north of Douds.

Open visitation began at noon today at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds. The family will be present from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

According to the Keokuk County Sheriff's Department information, the accident is being investigated by the Federal Mine Safety Inspection Department.
