BARTON, Rex William

Rex William BARTON, 75, of Lockridge, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at Henry County Health Center.

A service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Don Coffin officiating. Burial will be in Lambirth Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the memorial chapel, where the family will be present from 5-7 p.m.

Memorials have been established to H2O (Help to Others) and Lambirth Cemetery.

Mr. BARTON was born April 25, 1933, at home in rural Mount Pleasant, the son of Roy H. and Minnie Rae LaMAR BARTON. He married Lavina SCHANTZ June 3, 1956, in Washington, Iowa. She died Aug. 24, 2008.

Mr. BARTON attended country school Prairie Gem No. 9 for first through eighth grade and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1952. He and his wife lived on a family century farm in Henry County for 49 years. A life-long farmer, Mr. BARTON raised hogs and cattle and grew grain.

Mr. BARTON attended Cedar Creek Friends Church. He was a member of the Henry County ASCS Board and the Swinging S Promenaders Square Dance Club in Salem. While his children were growing up, he was involved in 4-H.

He was a gardener and a vendor at the farmers' markets in Mount Pleasant and Fairfield. He enjoyed fishing, completing yard work and playing cards.

Survivors include three sons, Roger BARTON, Kevin BARTON and wife Linda and Todd BARTON and wife Lisa, all of Mount Pleasant; two daughters, Laurie BARTLE and husband Steven of Fairfield and Beth CRAIG and husband Raymond of North Liberty; three sisters, Beryl RICH of Mount Pleasant, Vivian HILDEBRAND of Wayland and Wilma ROBERTS of Provo, Utah; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Edith Juanita BARTON.
