BARTON, Lavina

Lavina BARTON, 74, of Lockridge, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

A service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Don Coffin officiating. Burial will be in Lambirth Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon-8 p.m. Wednesday at the memorial chapel, where the family will be present from 5-7 p.m.

Memorials have been established to Lambirth Cemetery and to RSVP.

BARTON, Lavina Ann -- Lavina Ann BARTON, 74, of Lockridge died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Don Coffin officiating. Burial will be in Lambirth Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the memorial chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m.

Memorials have been established to Lambirth Cemetery and to RSVP, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Mrs. BARTON was born April 16, 1934, in Washington County, the daughter of David R. and Ada Fannie CHRISTNER SCHANTZ. She married Rex W. BARTON June 3, 1956, in Washington, Iowa. He survives.

The couple lived on a family century farm in Henry County for 49 years.

Mrs. BARTON received a teaching degree from Muscatine Junior College. In 1972, she graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College with a bachelor of arts degree in education. She taught second and third grades for one year in Conesville. She also taught in Vega Rural School in Jefferson County. She was a kindergarten teacher in Salem for Mount Pleasant community schools for 35 years. She retired in 1999.

Mrs. BARTON was a former Henry County 4-H leader and a Mount Pleasant Education Association member. She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, sketching and writing. She also was a vendor at the farmers' market.

Mrs. BARTON attended Cedar Creek Church.

Along with her husband, survivors include three sons, Roger BARTON, Kevin BARTON and wife Linda and Todd BARTON and wife Lisa, all of Mount Pleasant; two daughters, Laurie BARTLE and husband Steven of Fairfield and Beth CRAIG and husband Raymond of North Liberty; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline DUCK of Olathe, Kan., Ellen CROSSETT and Betty BEENBLOSSOM, both of Washington; and one brother, Donald SCHANTZ, of Washington.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Verda HENKEL and Darlene CRILE.
