SVOBODA, Steven John -- Steven John SVOBODA, 57, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Fairfield, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at his sister's residence in Cedar Rapids following a two-year battle with cancer.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

A general memorial has been established.

Mr. SVOBODA was born Feb. 17, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Thomas Emil and Margaret Katherine KEPLER SVOBODA. He married Shelly FAY Aug. 21, 1971, in Cedar Rapids.

Mr. SVOBODA graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School and later attended the University of Northern Iowa and University of Iowa. He lived in Washington from 1980-1987 and returned to Washington in 1996. Mr. SVOBODA was president of Eagle One Investments for the past 10 years.

He was an Iowa Hawkeye fan and a member of Washington County I Club.

Survivors include one son, Clinton SVOBODA; one daughter, Katie BEST and husband Christopher of Kirksville, Mo., two grandchildren; his former wife, Shelly SVOBODA of Washington, Iowa; two brothers, David SVOBODA of Cedar Rapids and John "Jack" SVOBODA of Cedar Rapids; and one sister, Theresa ALBERTS of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Thomas SVOBODA.
