Paul A. FERREL

Paul A. FERREL, 69, of Bettendorf, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bettendorf.

No visitation is planned.

Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice, American Cancer Society for Lymphoma research or Scott County Humane Society.

Runge Mortuary of Davenport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. FERREL was born Jan. 1, 1939, in Fairfield, the son of Ivyl and Wilda FERREL.

Mr. FERREL served in the Marine Corps from 1957-1959.

He had been a school psychologist for many years, having worked in Iowa City, Rock Springs, Wyo., and Bethel, Alaska. He wrote his autobiography and was currently awaiting the publishing of his children's books, which were in progress.

He enjoyed hiking in the mountains and being outdoors. He had great compassion for dogs. He also ran in numerous marathons, including the Boston Marathon. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Bettendorf.

Survivors include two sons, Mark FERREL and wife Diane of Burlingame, Kan., and Scott FERREL of Gainesville, Fla.; one daughter, Donna HAFNER and husband Roger of Bettendorf; four grandchildren; his mother of Keosauqua; two brothers, Victor FERREL of Fairfield and Phil FERRELL of Fairfield; and one sister, Marcene McCARTY of Fairfield.

His father preceded him in death.
