COOK, Marie Elaine -- Marie Elaine COOK, of Oskaloosa passed away Tuesday evening, June 17, 2008 at North Mahaska Nursing & Rehab in Oksaloosa. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30, Friday morning, June 20, 2008, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Stephen Mathison-Bowie officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Brighton, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., Thursday at the funeral chapel; the family will be at the chapel from 6:00 to 7:30 to greet visitors. Memorials may be made to The First Presbyterian church or The Stephens Memorial Animal Shelter.
Marie Elaine COOK was born October 6, 1922 in Wellston, Washington County, Iowa, daughter of Ross A. and Jessie E. (DODD) WHITACRE. Raised in various cities around the country as her mother worked, she returned to Brighton, Iowa. There she attended high school, but left to marry her sweetheart George COOK on June 30, 1940 in Kahoka, Missouri. After marriage, they lived in several cities including Davenport, Ottumwa, and Oskaloosa. Marie went back to school and earned her GED in 1973.
She was a devoted mother and homemaker, living most of her days in Oskaloosa, in the house that she and George built on 3rd Avenue West. She moved to the New Sharon Nursing Home in February of 2002 following a series of strokes. She then moved to the North Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center in Oskaloosa when it opened in October of 2007.
Marie was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, and served on several of its Circles. She loved gardening, quilting, and her many pets over the years.
She is survived by two sons David (and Cheri) of Muscatine; Samuel of Milan, Missouri; three grandchildren Steve COOK of Muscatine; Jennifer (and Duane) COOP of Wayland; and Timothy of Gainesville, Florida. Also three great grandsons Wesley, Bradley, and Ryan COOP of Wayland, and a sister-in-law Dorothy STONE of Marshalltown.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Roger WHITACRE in 1985, grandson Mark COOK in 1987, husband George in 1992, daughter-in-law Karen COOK and granddaughter Judith COOK in 1998.
