Betty Louise JONES HARLAN, 92, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Park Place Long Term Care Unit in Mount Pleasant (note: in Henry Co., IA).
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Herbert G. Shafer officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.
No visitation is planned.
Memorials may be made to the Park Place activity fund.
Mrs. HARLAN was born Aug. 13, 1915, in Fairfield, the daughter of Harry C. (sic - JONES) and Ruth Elizabeth SIMPSON JONES ROSS. She married LaVerne Watson HARLAN Oct. 27, 1935, at her mother-in-law's home in Fairfield. He died May 27, 1986.
Mrs. HARLAN was raised in Fairfield and graduated from Fairfield High School. She and her husband moved to Mount Pleasant from Fairfield in January 1938. From 1951-1959, they owned and operated Harlan's Newsstand. Mrs. HARLAN then substituted as a nighttime dispatcher for the Mount Pleasant Police Department.
Mrs. HARLAN was a member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She had been a member of the Republican Women's Club and Westside Mothers Club. She also served as a poll worker for various elections.
She enjoyed collecting fine china cups and tending her flowers.
Survivors include one son, David J. HARLAN of Keller, Texas.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one infant son, Jere LaVerne HARLAN, and two sisters, Nona NAVA and Helen Ruth ALVINE.
