TILLIS, Kenneth Ray -- Kenneth Ray TILLIS, 48, formerly of Fairfield, died of a heart attack Sunday evening, May 18, 2008, in Gadsden. Ala.

A funeral is planned at 1 p.m. Friday in Gadsden.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Fairfield.

Memorials for his children's education may be sent to Vicki TILLIS, 505 W. Jackson Ave., Fairfield 52556. Memorials for his family in Alabama may be sent to Earnestine TILLIS, 1207 Brookside Drive, Gadsden, AL 35901.

Mr. TILLIS was born Nov. 28, 1959, in Birmingham, Ala., the son of George and Earnestine TILLIS. He married Vicki Ilene CLARK of Fairfield Dec. 21, 1981, in Lawton, Okla. They divorced in November 2007.

After graduating from Gadsden High School in 1978, Mr. TILLIS enlisted in the U.S. Army as a light-wheeled vehicle mechanic and later re-enlisted as a heavy-wheeled vehicle mechanic. He served at Fort Sill, Okla.; Camp Red Cloud, Korea; Camp Zama and Sagami Depot, Japan; Fort Riley, Kan.; and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. After leaving the Army in 1988, he attended Lincoln Institute in Des Moines and earned an associate's degree in vehicle mechanics in 1990.

Mr. TILLIS worked as a mechanic at the Iowa Department of Transportation Fairfield Maintenance Garage for many years before purchasing and operating Auto Electric in Fairfield.

Survivors include two children, Kendra Rae and Ethan Clark TILLIS and their mother Vicki TILLIS, all of Fairfield; his mother, Earnestine TILLIS of Gadsden; two sisters, Karen CARTER and Kathy TILLIS; and three brothers, Anthony, Reggie and Ricky TILLIS, all of Alabama.

He was preceded in death by his father.
