BLACK, Helen -- Helen BLACK, 92, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Fairfield and Libertyville, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Mount Union.

Family visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Friday at the memorial chapel.

Memorials have been established to the Henry County Cancer Fund and First United Methodist Church.

Mrs. BLACK was born Nov. 17, 1915, in Mount Union, the daughter of Howard and Clara ROUTH SNYDER. She married Carl R. BLACK Dec. 12, 1945, in Fairfield. He died in 1984.

Mrs. BLACK grew up in the Mount Union area and graduated from Mount Union High School. She and her husband lived in the Fairfield and Libertyville areas. After her husband's death, Mrs. BLACK moved to Mount Pleasant. She was a homemaker, and once her children were older, she worked at the Glove Factory in Fairfield.

Mrs. BLACK raised a large vegetable garden and did a lot of canning. She enjoyed growing indoor and outdoor plants and flowers. She also enjoyed decorating her home, sewing clothes for her children, quilting, crocheting, making crafts and spending time with family.

Mrs. BLACK was a member of Libertyville Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant. She was active in United Methodist Women and volunteered with Henry County RSVP.

Survivors include two sons, Frank BLACK and wife Amy of Savannah, Ga., and Paul BLACK of Des Moines; one son-in-law, Dale CAMPBELL of Mount Pleasant; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Carla CAMPBELL; two brothers, Hugh and Vivan SNYDER; one sister, Maxine ALLEN; and one half sister, Vera VAN VRANKEN.
