DIERS, Robert H. -- Robert H. DIERS, 73, of Wayland, died Thursday, May 8, 2008, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following a lengthy illness.
A funeral has been set for 10 a.m. Monday at Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church in Swedesburg, with the Rev. Fran Griffeth and Bishop Philip L. Hougen officiating. Burial will be in New Sweden Lutheran Cemetery near Lockridge.
Open visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland. Family visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Memorials may be designated for pulmonary fibrosis research at the University of Iowa, First Augustana Lutheran Church or diabetes education at the Henry County Health Center.
Mr. DIERS was born Nov. 14, 1934, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Harlan Julius and Edith L. GRAF DIERS. He married Mary Kathryn SUTTON March 21, 1954, at Hope Lutheran Church in Brighton.
Mr. DIERS graduated from Wayland High School in 1953. He farmed from 1954-1987 in the Germanville area south of Brighton and also owned and operated R.H. Diers and Associates Insurance form 1966 until retiring in 2007.
Mr. DIERS was a member of First Augustana Lutheran Church in Lockridge, Wayland Lions Club, Farm Bureau and Wayland Area Tractor Club. He served on the Wayland Economic Development Board, Muscatine Lutheran Homes Board, National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, Wayland Festival of Lights Committee and Wayland Fourth of July Committee and held the designation of Life Underwriters Training Council Fellow.
He enjoyed collecting antique Allis Chalmers tractors, playing cards, playing Santa for the Wayland Festival of Lights celebration and coaching and umpiring softball.
Survivors include his wife; three children, Dwight DIERS and wife Nancy of Fairfield, Deb ROTH and husband Reg of Wayland and Dave DIERS and wife Jessica of Wayland; one brother, Everett DIERS of El Paso, Texas; one sister, Ruth RHOADES of Brighton; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
