BROWN, Alice N. -- Alice N. BROWN, 99, formerly of Douds, died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008, at her daughter's home in rural New London.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron and the Rev. Harold Harryman officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Church east of Douds.
Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with family present from 5-7 p.m.
Memorials to Christ United Methodist Church may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 19657 Danville Road, New London 52645.
Mrs. BROWN was born Oct. 12, 1908, in Ottumwa, the daughter of John and Edna TANNER DANIELS. She married Earl W. BROWN Dec. 23, 1941, in Kansas City, Mo. He died Nov. 16, 1971.
Mrs. BROWN moved to Douds with her parents as a youth and graduated from Douds-Leando High School as valedictorian of the class of 1927. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa. She was an elementary school teacher in Kansas City, Iowa City, Milford, Vinton, Milton, Keosauqua and Douds. In retirement, she had lived in Douds, Keosauqua and Winfield, then with her daughter since 2006.
Mrs. BROWN was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star Twin City Chapter No. 258 in Douds.
She enjoyed teaching, quilting crocheting and being with family.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathleen MESSER and husband Mark of rural New London; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John, Arthur and Clarence DANIELS; and four sisters, Mabel HIGDON, Edith RENES, Margaret MORROW and Elizabeth DANIELS in childhood.
