PUMPHREY, Mary Isabelle 'Marybelle' -- Mary Isabelle "Marybelle" PUMPHREY, 88, formerly of the Batavia area, died at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at Vista Woods Care Center.

A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ottumwa, with the Rev. John Spiegel officiating. Burial will be in Competine Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa, with family visitation from 5-7 p.m. A Christian Wake will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church or the Batavia Library.

Mrs. PUMPHREY was born March 7, 1920, in Ottumwa, the daughter of William C. and Elizabeth ROBERTS FABRITZ. She married Rollo PUMPHREY May 28, 1942, in Ottumwa. He died March 22, 1994.

A 1939 graduate of Ottumwa Heights College, Mrs. PUMPHREY taught in country school. She returned to college, earning a degree from Parsons College in 1968. She taught at Farson for two years and did substitute teaching, retiring in 1993. A resident of the Batavia area for 32 years, she moved to Ottumwa in 2006.

Mrs. PUMPHREY was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society and Fairfield Retired Teachers Association. She was a 50-year member of the Bladensburg Club.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy THOMASON of Middle Amana; four sons, Jack PUMPHREY and wife Betty Lou of Hedrick, James PUMPHREY of Springville, Robert J. PUMPHREY of Batavia and Bill PUMPHREY and wife Deb of Ottumwa; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty HALLBERG and Julie MUCHOW, both of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by one son, John Richard "Dick" PUMPHREY; one daughter-in-law, Dee Ann PUMPHREY; one granddaughter; two brothers, Edward and Paul FABRITZ; and one sister, Kathryn WEEKS.
