Nancy Ann HAWBAKER

Nancy Ann HAWBAKER, 71, of Hillsboro, Iowa died at 7:25 PM on April 9, 2008 at her home in the company of her three sons.

Born August 9, 1936 in rural Henry County, she was the daughter of James "Mac" and Lola "Babe" (HARLAN) DODDS.

Nancy grew up in Hillsboro, Iowa, and graduated high school in 1954. She obtained a degree in elementary education from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant. In 1955, Nancy married her high school sweetheart, Thomas D. HAWBAKER. Tom and Nancy farmed briefly, and taught school in Danville, Denmark and Colfax, Iowa. They moved to Virginia in 1963, where Tom began his career in the Central Intelligence Agency. Nancy made a home, raised a family and supported Tom in the important social aspects of his work throughout their postings to Jordan, the Philippines, Egypt, Sri Lanka and the U.A.E. Nancy worked for the CIA herself from 1963-1965 and 1976-1984 as a secretary and a support assistant in the collection of intelligence. In 1984, Tom and Nancy retired to Nancy's childhood home in Hillsboro, Iowa.

Nancy was an accomplished quilter, cook, gardener and painter. She enjoyed yoga, biking, travel, current affairs, and, perhaps most of all, grandparenting.

Survivors include her three sons, Thomas A. HAWBAKER, Joe M. (Mary TALEN) HAWBAKER and Steven "Woody" HAWBAKER. She leaves behind five grandchildren, Katie, Luke, Sarah, Henry and Daniel, her two sisters, Selma "Sam" DINSMORE and Patricia "Pat" ANDERSON, and her brother, James Michael DODDS. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
