KOONS, Carroll Ellis -- Carroll Ellis KOONS, 97, of Ankeny, died March 1, 2008, at Sunny View Care Center.

Carroll was born December 6, 1910, to Claude and Maude WAGNER KOONS near Batavia, Iowa. His father died when he was 6 years old and his mother married William P. BARTHOLOW in April 1920; giving him brothers Olen and Merril BARTHOLOW.

Carroll graduated from Libertyville High School in 1929 and graduated from McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas. He taught school for several years. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Much of his duty was in Ethiopia. After the war he worked at the Veteran's Administration office in Des Moines until his retirement.

He married Vera Fern FUNK August 13, 1950. They were married at Stover Memorial Church of the Brethren, Des Moines, Iowa, where he was an organist for many years. Carroll enjoyed playing the piano and giving piano concerts at Sunny View Care Center.

Survivors include his wife, Vera, a resident of Sunny View Care Center, a sister-in-law, Bettye BARTHOLOW, a niece, Mary Kay (Roy) BONNETT, and his devoted care-giver, Gene Wallace. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Olen and Merril.

Services March 6, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Garden, Des Moines.
