McWHIRTER, Ray 'Ed' -- Ray "Ed" McWHIRTER, 78, of Batavia, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Danny Cary officiating. Following the service, the body will be cremated, and burial of the cremains will be at a later date.

Family visitation will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Batavia First Responders or to the family. Cards and memorials may be sent to 100 Agency St., Batavia 52533.

Mr. McWHIRTER was born May 8, 1929, in Fairfield, the son of Ray and Mary McCORMICK McWHIRTER. He married Betty FARQUHAR in 1951. He later married Louise BAKER in 1980.

Mr. McWHIRTER graduated from Fairfield High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He owned and operated Ed's Shell in partnership with Jim Willis. Following that, he was employed at Whitmore Electric and WLD Trucking before retirement.

Mr. McWHIRTER was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2271, BPOE. No. 1192 and American Legion Post No. 47.

Survivors include his wife; five children, Susie GESUALDO and husband Jim of Centerville, Scott McWHIRTER and wife Deb of Springfield, Mo., Steve McWHIRTER and wife Pam of Maple Plain, Minn., Shannon McWHIRTER and wife Cindy of Fairfield and Stacey McWHIRTER of Fairfield; four stepchildren, Debb SHAULL of Sigourney, Bob BAKER and wife Roberta of Grand Junction, Colo., Rick BAKER of Sigourney and Randy BAKER and wife Clella of Richland; 10 grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 15 stepgreat-grandchildren; and one brother, Rodger McWHIRTER of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Doug; and one brother, Wilbur.

Note: Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, in Lot 4th.194 with his young son Doug, who he lost in 1957. He was divorced from Betty who survives him, and Louise died in 2011 and was buried in Batavia Cemetery.
