Marie Peiffer, 90, of Keota, died following a brief illness Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

A funeral is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with the Rev. Marty Goetz and Jason Nicholls officiating. Burial will be at Friends Cemetery in Richland.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Peiffer was born June 4, 1916, in Northwood, the daughter of Joseph and Charity Morrow Hartnell. She married Omer N. Peiffer July 1, 1939, in Van Nuys, Calif. He died in 1973.

Mrs. Peiffer grew up in the Richland community. She graduated from Richland High School and Parsons College. She taught rural school for four years before moving to Van Nuys, Calif., where she taught at a private school for six years. She and her husband then moved to the Marion area where they owned and operated Peiffer’s Jewelry Stores in Marion and Cedar Rapids for about 25 years. She retired in 1976. She moved to Keota in 1983.

Mrs. Peiffer was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Church in Valley. She volunteered at the St. Luke’s Hospital gift shop and enjoyed helping other people.

Survivors include one brother, Tommy Hartnell of Richland.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Tommy Peiffer; and one brother, Doyle Hartnell.
