SPANGLER, Harold F. -- Harold F. SPANGLER, 86, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington, with Larry Fletcher officiating. Interment, with military honors conducted by Crawfordsville American Legion Post 593 and Washington American Legion Post 29, will take place at Crawfordsville Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at noon Friday at the funeral home, where family will be present from 6-8 p.m.

A memorial has been established to United Church of Crawfordsville or United Presbyterian Home.

Mr. SPANGLER was born Oct, 18, 1920, in Crawfordsville, the son of Fred L. and Jennie ALLEN SPANGLER. He married Verna BRIGGS Jan. 21, 1948, in Lockridge.

Mr. SPANGLER graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1938. He served as a pilot in the United States Air Force during World War II. He worked for and with Al Hahn in the rock and lime business and was later employed as a school custodian for 19 years. Mr. SPANGLER was last employed by Washington County Maintenance, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of United Church of Crawfordsville and American Legion, where he was finance officer for 42 years and Past Adjutant of the First District of Iowa. He had served on the Crawfordsville School Board. Mr. SPANGLER volunteered with the American Red Cross and the American Legion at the Veterans Administration Hospital for 20 years. He was a volunteer firefighter and served as chief of the Crawfordsville Fire Department for 16 years.

He made many quilts, lap robes and pot holders; worked with stained glass; made wood ornaments; and enjoyed bowling, gardening and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Robert Allen SPANGLER and wife Birgit JOSENHANS of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; and one daughter, Linda Jean SPANGLER of Belfair, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Chet and Allen.
