OBITUARY

GEORGE L. DANA

George L. DANA, nearing eighty years of age, one of the best known and most prominent retired farmers of Fairfield, died Sunday morning at 2:15, from a stroke of apoplexy after an illness of less than two days.

Mr. DANA was born in Bureau County, Illinois, June 19, 1852, where he spent his childhood and school days. His education was acquired in the common schools and college; he was a descendant in line with the eminent journalist Chas. A. DANA.

He was married to Miss Hattie WOLF May 11, 1873 and two years later they moved to a farm four and one half miles north of Fairfield where by industry and good management in grain and stock raising they met with a goodly degree of success.

He was a truthful and honest man, not because "Honesty is the policy" but because he believed and likewise practiced it.

His motto was "As ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them." He was nearing his four score years, which in itself indicates a good character and a correct mode of living.

In 1910 they rented their farm and to an extent retired. Moving to Fairfield, they purchased a home at 201 E. Grimes St., where he has since resided. His wife preceeded (sic) him in death abour four year. To them were born 6 children, whom are all living--Mrs. Jennie WEST of Clark, Nebr., Mrs. Catherine COOP of Fairfield, and David of Rose Creek, Minnesota, Mrs. Mildred WHITHAM and Earl of Fairfield and the latters twin brother Clarence who resides on the home farm north of town. He also leaves sixteen grandchildren and ten great grand children and a sister at Long Beach, California.

All of his children except David, though men and women, but children in their affection for their father, were at his bedside in the early morning of Oct. 18, 1931, when his breath calmly and peacefully ceased.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday by Rev. U. S. Smith of the First M. E. church of Fairfield. Those who carried his remains to its last resting place in the beautiful Evergreen cemetery were his two sons, Clarence and Earl and two sons-in-law, A. L. COOP and Frank WEST, two grandsons Roy and Raymond COOK (sic - COOP).
