SPIELMAN, Harvey Edward -- Harvey Edward SPIELMAN, Brigadier General, USMC retired, age 84, died Friday, January 19, 2007, at his home in Pinehurst, NC. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 AM Thursday, February 8, 2007, at Arlington National Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia SPIELMAN of Pinehurst; a daughter, Sharon COTTRILL of Charlotte, NC; a sister, Virginia BROSSEIT of Janesville, WI; a brother, John SPIELMAN (Sally) of Marion, IA; a grandson, Mark SPIELMAN (Carla) of Staunton, VA; a granddaughter, Victoria SPIELMAN of Arlington, VA; great-grandchildren, Caitlin SPIELMAN and Meredith SPIELMAN, both of Staunton, VA; a daughter-in-law, Brenda SPIELMAN of Mechanicsville, VA; and nephews, nieces and other loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Christian and Bertha Winifred WOODWORTH SPIELMAN and a son, Richard SPIELMAN.

Harvey was born December 27, 1922, in Brighton, Iowa. He received his Bachelor's Degree in 1947 from Parsons College, Fairfield, Iowa, and his Master's Degree from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of the National War College.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in October 1942, and retired September 1, 1974, with the rank of Brigadier General. He served in World War II, Korea, Dominican Republic and Vietnam. Harvey was a Marine Corps Aide and the Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy.

The SPIELMANs moved to Pinehurst, NC, in 1976, where Harvey became active in golf administration. He served as General Chairman of the Hall of Fame PGA Tour events of 1991, 1992, and 1993; Hall of Fame Pro-Am from 1984 to 1989; Women's Amateur Championship in 1989; Volunteer Open Championship in 1994; and the U.S. Women's Open Championship in 1996. He was a Past President of the Pinehurst Country Club Board of Governors, the Tin Whistles, and the Sandhills chapter of the Retired Officers Association. He was also a member of the Southern Pines Masonic Lodge and the York Rite Bodies.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 8300 Health Park, Suite 10, Raleigh, NC 27615. Arrangements by Boles Funeral Home of Pinehurst, NC.
