PETERS, John R. 'Pete' -- John R. "Pete" PETERS, 85, of Fort Madison, died at 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2007, at Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison.

A funeral will beat (sic) 11 a.m. Friday, at Barr Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Brenda Goodall officiating. Burial will be in Soldiers Circle Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison, with graveside military rites conducted by Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard.

Family visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the chapel.

A memorial has been established to Fort Madison Bloodhound Booster Club, and contributions may be left at the chapel.

Mr. PETERS was born May 19, 1921, in Aurora, Neb., the son of Joseph Rollin and Hattie Elizabeth WILSON PETERS. He married Elizabeth Elaine BARNES Dec. 19, 1945, in Barhydt Chapel on the Parsons College campus.

Mr. PETERS' family moved to Fairfield in 1938 when he was 17. He was a 1941 graduate of Fairfield High School. While still in high school, he joined the National Guard and was stationed with the 34th Division at Camp Claiborne in Louisiana. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1941-1945 in the Medical Corps in Ireland, England, North Africa and Italy. He received a Bronze Star and four bronze battle stars. He was released from active duty in September 1945 in time to begin classes at Parsons College in Fairfield.

After graduating from Parsons in 1948, he and his wife moved to Fort Madison where he was a teacher and coach in the public school for 35 years, retiring in 1983. He completed a master's degree in education from Drake University in 1955.

Mr. PETERS was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks 374, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2271 in Fairfield, AARP, National Education Association and Iowa State Education Association.

Mr. PETERS was an avid sports fan, especially football. He was inducted into the Fort Madison Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Phillip PETERS and wife Karen of Cedar Rapids; one daughter-in-law, Karen PETERS of Fort Madison; one brother, Kenneth PETERS of Ridge Manor, Fla.; four grandchildren; and one stepgrandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, three sisters and one son, John R. "Skip" PETERS.
