Madelyn B. NUTT, 102, formerly of Douds, died Monday Jan. 22, 2007 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Wynnona NUTT near Catlett, VA where she had lived the past three years.
She was born Dec. 21, 1904 near Middletown, IA to Carson John and Amanda UNTERKIRCHER BLAKEWAY. She married Thomas O. NUTT Sept. 16, 1925 at Galesburg, IL. He preceded her in death March 10, 1982. She grew up in the Burlington area, graduated from Burlington High Shcool and earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master's degrees at University of Iowa.
She lived most of her adult life in Douds, taught and was principal at Douds High School and after school reorganization in 1962 taught mathematics at Van Buren Community High School, Keosauqua until retiring in 1970. Following her husband's death she was appointed to Van Buren County Board of Supervisors to complete his unexpired term, served on Van Buren County Compensation Board and several terms on the Iowa State Judicial Nominating Committee.
Madelyn was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Douds which she served in many capacities including Sunday School teacher and as long-time secretary of the Church Board. She was a 71 year member and Past Matron of Twin City Chapter No. 258, Order of Eastern Star, Douds, a charter member of Van Buren Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, was a former member of Van Buren County Republican Central Committee, Douds Community Club, United Methodist Women, Republican Women and Douds Book Club, and was a founding board member of Twin City Manor, Inc.
Surviving are her son, Tom and wife Wynnona of Catlett, VA, eight grandsons, Thomas III, Theodore, Frederick, David and Scott NUTT and Wallace, Jr. and Jeffrey KUNZMAN, several great grandchildren and a great grandchild (sic - great-great-grandchild?). In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Caroline KUNZMAN, a son, John Carson NUTT, a granddaughter, Lynne-Rose NUTT SMITH and a sister, Verda KERN. A grandson, James KUNZMAN died Jan. 27, 2007.
Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. Sat. Feb. 3, 2007 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds, Rev. Robert Farr, Rev. Harold Harryman and Rev. Len Garrison officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery north of Douds.
Visitation will open at 2 P.M. Friday Feb. 2 at the funeral home. A Delta Kappa Gamma ceremony of remembrance will be at 7 P.M. followed by family visitation 7:30-8:30.
Memorials to Christ united (sic - not capitalized) Methodist Church or Van Buren County Hospital may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 328, Catlett, VA 20119.
