HALL, Bernal 'Pete' -- Bernal "Pete" HALL, 81, of Ottumwa, formerly of Fairfield, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 24, 2007, at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

Arrangements are pending at Goettsch Funeral Home in Monticello.

HALL, Bernal Dee 'Pete' -- Bernal Dee "Pete" HALL, 81, of Ottumwa, formerly of Fairfield, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 24, 2007, at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

A funeral was held this morning at the Goettsch Funeral Home in Monticello. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, with Iowa State Patrol honors.

Mr. HALL was born June 15, 1925, in Lisbon, the son of Bernal C. and Corrine HOUSE HALL. He married Donna M. HACKBARTH Aug. 15, 1947, in Des Moines. She died in 2004.

Mr. HALL attended grade school in Lisbon. His family moved to Monticello in 1939, and he graduated from the Monticello Community Schools in 1943.

After graduation, Mr. HALL enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He fought in the South Pacific and served in the occupations forces in Japan after the war. He was discharged in 1946.

Mr. HALL joined the Iowa State Patrol in July 1947. He served in Cedar Falls and West Union as a driver's examiner. He was transferred to Fairfield, where he was a trooper for 17 years. He was promoted to sergeant in 1965 and served in Charles city. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1976 and served as post commander in Fort Dodge and later Cedar Rapids. He retired in 1986. He and his wife moved to Guttenberg, where he was the assistant chief and later police chief for five years. He retired and they moved to Monticello for five years and then to their home near Centerville on Lake Rathbun.

Mr. HALL was the emergency management director in Appanoose County for several years.

He belonged to the Iowa National Guard, serving 21 years from 1950 until 1971, retiring as a chief warrant officer.

Survivors include two children, Mike HALL and wife Gail of Red Wing, Minn., and Patricia CHENEY and husband Steve of Oskaloosa; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Harlan HALL of Monticello.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ray; and one sister, Yovonne DONAHUE.
