CHURCH, H. Wayne -- H. Wayne CHURCH, 55, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at his residence following a brief illness.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Weir and Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Jerry Phillips officiating. Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by Henry County Honor Guard.
Visitation began at 9 a.m. today and lasts until 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 5-7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Henry County Avenue of Flags.
Mr. CHURCH was born Feb. 6, 1951, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Howard Russell and Willa Mae WOODS CHURCH. He married Christy Marie HENKEL July 25, 2006, at his home in Mount Pleasant.
Mr. CHURCH was raised in Mount Pleasant and Trenton before moving with his family to Lockridge.
Mr. CHURCH was drafted into the U.S. Army and entered Jan. 26, 1971, at Fort Des Moines. He received several commendations for his expertise in firearms. He was honorably discharged as a private Feb. 23, 1973, at Fort Riley, Kan. He was then transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves and remained with the reserves until Jan. 24, 1977.
Mr. CHURCH worked for Lomont Molding and for Maddy Tree Service. He also worked as a bus driver for Tolson Community Action Center. He was employed by Rapistan when the company built the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Mount Pleasant. He also worked at Dexter Company and Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown. Most recently, he was a carrier for the Burlington Hawk Eye. He and his wife cared for Camp Harlan, tending to the mowing and painting.
Mr. CHURCH was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2561 and the Amvets Post No. 44, both of Mount Pleasant. He was a member of American Legion Robert Tribby Post No. 58, American Legion Riders Post 721 of Coralville, Henry County Avenue of Flags, Henry County Honor Guard and A.B.A.T.E. District 14.
Survivors include his wife; his mother of Lockridge; one son, Anthony CHURCH of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Gail WIGINGTON and husband Tim of Mount Pleasant; two stepsons, Richard HENKEL Jr. of Lockridge and Christopher HENKEL of Iowa City; one brother, Tom CHURCH of Mediapolis; two sisters, Sheila CHURCH of Mount Pleasant and Vickie CHURCH of Davenport; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his father.
