BROWN, Walter L. -- Walter L. BROWN, 98, formerly of Birmingham, died at 11:15 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2007, at Nelson Nursing Home in Fairfield.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Dianne Brokken and the Rev. Harold Harryman officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery east of Douds.

Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where family will be present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials to Zion Lutheran Cemetery or a charity of the donor's choice may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 2197 Tamarack Ave., Lockridge 52635.

Mr. BROWN was born Oct. 17, 1908, near Douds, the son of Edward and Rosa CANNY BROWN. He married Cora JEFFREY Dec. 2, 1933, in Ottumwa. She died April 15, 1995.

Mr. BROWN and his wife had lived in Des Moines and Douds and farmed west of Birmingham. They had also lived several years in Fairfield where Mr. BROWN was employed at Dexter Company for 25 years. In their retirement, the BROWNs operated campgrounds for the Army Corps of Engineers in several southern states and at Lake Rathbun. They moved back to Birmingham in April 1994. Mr. BROWN had been a resident of Nelson Nursing Home since May 24, 2005.

Mr. BROWN was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Douds.

He enjoyed gardening, spending time with his grandchildren and dancing.

Survivors include one daughter, Beverly HORTON of Lockridge; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert BROWN; one son-in-law, Carroll HORTON; and one brother, Floyd BROWN.
