Arlene May CHATFIELD, 86, of Glenwood, Minn., died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, at Glenwood Retirement Village.
A service is set for 11 a.m. Monday at Glenwood United Parish, with the Rev. Jerry Skinness and the Rev. Greg Kappahan officiating.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Hoplin Funeral Home, and at 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
Another visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Fairfield. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield. Memorials may be directed to the Arlene Chatfield Memorial Fund with the Glenwood Dollars for Scholars program administered by Eagle Bank in Glenwood or Flaming Pines Youth Camp near Park Rapids.
Mrs. CHATFIELD was born April 3, 1919, in Libertyville, the daughter of John L. and Mary E. TWEEDY MCCLEARY. She married Robert CHATFIELD June 3, 1939. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. CHATFIELD graduated from high school in Libertyville in 1935 and attended Parsons College where she earned an elementary teaching certificate. She then taught in Libertyville for two years. After marriage she spent several years as a full-time farm wife and mother because married women were not permitted to teach, but was later rehired to teach. In 1949, she and her husband opened a 52-bed nursing and convalescent home in Ottumwa. Mrs. CHATFIELD was a licensed practical nurse and became involved in organizational efforts of the Iowa Nursing Homes Association. She later continued her education at Bemidji State Teacher’s College and reentered the teaching profession in 1957 in Minnesota. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Parsons College in 1961, the year she and her husband moved to Glenwood. In 1962, she began teaching first grade in Glenwood, which she continued until she was named director of the reading program. She received her master’s degree in teaching from Mankato State University in 1979. She retired from teaching in 1981 and continued to substitute teach for several years.
Mrs. CHATFIELD organized the Glenwood Adult Literacy program, the Reading is Fundamental Project, Junior Great Books, the Right to Read Task Force and the MS Read-a-Thon. She was named Pope County Teacher of the Year in 1968 and honored with the Exemplary Teacher Reading Award, the Minnesota Literacy Council Project Award, and the International Reading Award.
Mrs. CHATFIELD was a member of the Kandiyohi Church of Christ.
Mrs. CHATFIELD enjoyed church activities, gardening, traveling, family, reading and writing.
Survivors include three daughters, Sheryl PAULSON of Blaine, Minn., Karen CHATFIELD of Columbia Heights, Minn., and Roberta GONZALEZ and husband Antelmo of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one son, Nelson CHATFIELD and wife Serita of Grand Prairie, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Doris DAVIS of Fairfield.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Wilma “Pat” CURTIS; and one great-great-grandchild.
