Harold SYFERT, 97, of Hillsboro, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Salem Friends Church, with the Rev. Nathan Martin officiating. Burial will be in Salem East Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will be present from 5-7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem East Cemetery or Salem Friends Church.

Mr. SYFERT was born May 1, 1909, in Keosauqua, the son of James and Lily Warner SYFERT. He married Helen M. WATSON July 21, 1943, in the Christian Church parsonage in Ottumwa.

Mr. SYFERT grew up in rural Keosauqua where he attended country school. He was a farmer and sheepshearer. He sheared across southeast Iowa and in Wyoming and Montana. He lived in rural Salem for 33 years, later moving to Fairfield where he lived for six years. He then moved to Hillsboro where [he] lived for more than 20 years.

Mr. SYFERT attended Salem Friends Church.

He enjoyed being outdoors, turkey hunting, fishing and trapping.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Carroll SYFERT and wife Jeanette of Salem and Doyle SYFERT and wife Nancy of Salem; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Rex SYFERT of Keosauqua; and three sisters, Kathryn BEER of Marion, Ruth STANSBERRY of Cedar Rapids and Mary BRADFIELD of Birmingham.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Louise PICKARD; two brothers, Martin SYFERT and Glen SYFERT; and one sister, Rita JEFFREY.
