Mon., July 10, 2006, p. 10.Kenneth L. STEINBECK, 85, of Richland died from cancer at 2:40 a.m. Friday, July 7, 2006, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.
A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Richland United Methodist Church, with Rev. Kim Gates officiating. Burial will be in Richland Friends Cemetery.
Open visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at Gould Funeral Home in Richland, with the family present from 7-8:30 p.m.
Memorials have been established to American Cancer Society, Hospice of Central Iowa, Heifer International or Richland United Methodist Church and may be left at the church or mailed to the family.
Mr. STEINBECK was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Rubio, to A.J. “Steamer” and Vera Fleig STEINBECK. He married Margret Ann VAN ORDER April 26, 1943, in Ottumwa.
Mr. STEINBECK grew up in Rubio, graduated from Richland High School in 1939 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business from University of Iowa in 1943. He was a member of the university track team and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Mr. STEINBECK served in the U.S. Army Pacific Theater in a tank destroyer division where he earned the rank of Captain.
Mr. STEINBECK sold automotive parts from 1947-1988 for Sieg Ottumwa Company and worked in the Washington store.
Mr. STEINBECK was a member of the Richland United Methodist Church ever since moving to a farm north of Richland in 1953. He served on many church boards, taught Sunday school and led the Methodist men’s group, sheparding their work in restoring grave markers in many area cemeteries. He was a member of the Federation Bank board, formerly Rubio Savings Bank, a 50-year member of Richland American Legion Post 504, a 50-year member of Richland Masonic Lodge No. 38, a Lake Darling board member, a Keokuk County Conservation board member when Belva Deer Park was created, a Pekin High School board member, a Keokuk County SEIDA Board member representing Richland senior citizens and a Cypress Village board member. He supported the Gideon Society and Heifer Project International.
He enjoyed the outdoors and worked as a shepherd, most recently tending a flock of Katahdin Sheep.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kristen HESS of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kortney GRAYBILL and husband David, of Tacoma, Wash.; four grandchildren; and one brother, Carroll STEINBECK of Rubio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Karen Lee WOOLUMS.
