Harvey William SPURGEON, 91, of Keosauqua, died at 1:25 a.m. today, Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

A funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. James H. Wakelin officiating. Burial will follow in Fellows Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Beer-Barker Post No. 113.

Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with an open Masonic service at 3 p.m. followed by family visitation until 4 p.m.

Memorials to Keosauqua Lions Club may be left at the funeral home or mailed to Elaine BOZMAN, 5018 L Ave., Wapello 52653.

Mr. SPURGEON was born May 4, 1915, near Bloomfield, the son of Glen and Cora SPURGEON. He married Doris Marie CHADWICK Sept. 3, 1939.

Mr. SPURGEON and his wife moved to Keosauqua, where he owned and operated Spurgeon’s Jewelry, in 1949. He was a licensed watchmaker for 50 years. He then worked in the Keosauqua Post Office for 16 years, 10 of which as postmaster. A self-educated man, he received his high school general education development credential diploma from Indian Hills Community College in 1972.

Mr. SPURGEON was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. SPURGEON was a longtime member of Beer-Barker Post 113, holding many county and district offices. He also was a longtime member of the Disabled American Veterans, a 50-year member of both Eastern Star and Keosauqua Lodge No. 10 A.F. and A.M.

He served four years on the city council and several years on the light plant board and county veterans board. He served as an elder of the Christian church and as an assistant leader of the Keosauqua Boy Scout Troop. He was a member of Keosauqua Lions Club and Rotary Club of Keosauqua. He was a recipient of the “Man of the Year” award from Keosauqua Commercial Club.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Elaine BOZMAN and husband Richard of Wapello, Lorraine GUY and husband Wendel of Washington, Iowa, and Nancy RAE and husband David of Salisbury, Mo.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys HULEN and Irene JOHNSON, both of Bloomfield.
