Melvin F. SCHNEIDER, 84, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at Washington County Hospital.

A service will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, with the Rev. Ed O’Melia officiating. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post No. 29 will take place at the St. Joseph Cemetery in East Pleasant Plain.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday at Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family will be present from 3-5 p.m. Sunday. A prayer service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary.

A general memorial has been established. Online condolences may be sent via www.jonesfh.com.

Mr. SCHNEIDER was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Riverside, the son of Peter and Agnes Streb SCHNEIDER. He married Loretta FRITZ Sept. 10, 1949, at St. Joseph’s Church in East Pleasant Plain.

Mr. SCHNEIDER graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Riverside and later graduated from University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo. He and his wife were residents of Washington since 1968. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Marines in the South Pacific and Japan. He had farmed in Riverside and Crawfordsville and later worked as a manager of Production Credit Association. During the 1980s farm crisis, he was a national consultant, advising farmers across the United States on strategies to maintain their farming operations.

Mr. SCHNEIDER was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington where he taught religious education for a number of years. He also was a member of Knights of Columbus where he served as treasurer. He was involved in 4-H Club and Washington County Democrats.

He was interested in Washington County history and genealogy, and he enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Nancy MILLER of Sandpoint, Idaho; one son, Steven SCHNEIDER of Wellman; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert SCHNEIDER of Iowa City and Elmer SCHNEIDER of Riverside; and one sister, Mary Ellen ALBERHASKY of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Marybeth; and one brother, Maynard SCHNEIDER.
