Arlene Mary SCHMITT, 72, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, at her residence following a brief illness.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ed O’Melia officiating. Interment will be in Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.

Visitation began at noon today at Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family will be present from 6-9 p.m. A Catholic Daughter Rosary will be held at 5:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established to St. Jude’s Children Hospital or Hospice of Washington County. Online condolences may be sent via www.jonesfh.com.

Mrs. SCHMITT was born Feb. 28, 1934, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Vincent and Mary Franzen GEVOCK. She married Bernard P. SCHMITT April 25, 1953, in East Pleasant Plain. He died in 1999.

Mrs. SCHMITT attended Walnut Rural School No. 5 and graduated from Fairfield High School. She worked in the dietary department of United Presbyterian Home for many years. She later worked for five years as assistant manager at Outside-In.

Mrs. SCHMITT was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington. She also was a member of Catholic Daughters.

She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to numerous card clubs. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and organizing Friday night outings.

Survivors include three daughters, Rose BIXBY and husband Eugene of Ainsworth, Betty SEDLACEK and husband Neil of Washington and Bonnie LINS and husband Joe of Washington; one son, Richard SCHMITT and wife Traci of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one great-grandson and one brother, George GEVOCK.
