Jay H. HORNING, 81, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at home under Hospice care.

Memorials may be made to Beacon House, 2151 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, FL 33713, or to Daystar Life Center, 226 Sixth St. S., St. Petersburg, FL 33701.

Mr. HORNING was born in Richland.

Mr. HORNING attended Parsons College and graduated from the University of Iowa. He worked for the Muscatine Journal for two years. He joined the St. Petersburg Times in 1976, leaving the Des Moines Tribune, where he worked for 25 years. After his retirement in 1990, he continued to write features and columns.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. HORNING was a member of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church and a volunteer at Beacon House, a shelter for homeless men.

He enjoyed traveling, reading, attending theater productions and listening to the independent community radio station.

Survivors include two sons, Hal of Philadelphia and David of St. Petersburg; three daughters, Jody HORNING of Des Moines, Katy HORNING of Madison, Wis., and Jeanne MILKEY of St. Petersburg; and six grandchildren.
