Mon., July 24, 2006, p. 8.Horace “Buster” HESSELTINE, 95, formerly of Brighton, died at 5:55 A.M. Saturday July 22, 2006 at the Washington County Hospital. He had been in failing health. He was born June 24, 1911 near Brighton to Ed and Mary Henrietta (BARNETT) HESSELTINE. Mr. HESSELTINE married Eva M. FOSS on June 30, 1934 in Washington and she died December 18, 1993. Mr. HESSELTINE lived most of his life in the Brighton area and attended area schools.
He worked for the railroad for a short time and for Iowa Malleable Iron Works in Fairfield for 29 years while operating his own farm near Pleasant Plain. Mr. HESSELTINE moved into Brighton in 1984 and moved to the Washington Care Center in 1999. He was an active member of the Lake Darling Saddle Club and showed his pony hitch setup at area horse shows. Mr. HESSELTINE and his wife raised several nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his niece Patricia (LANGDALE) MCDOWELL of Fairfield and her husband Randy, their three children: Megan NELSON of Germanville, Mary Ellen MCDOWELL of Cedar Falls and Katie MCDOWELL of Fairfield, one sister, Marjorie POLTON of Rock Island, IL, his niece Thelma FARRIER and her husband Dean of Washington, Karen HEINEMAN and her husband Ron of East Pleasant Plain, other nieces and nephews including: Gary, Ed, Don and Jim POLTON, Marta HANSON and Nancy FLAHERTY. In addition to his wife, Mr. HESSELTINE was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Harold and Donald HESSELTINE and two sisters: Ethel VAN WINKLE and Sylvia HANSON.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday July 25, 2006 at the Gould Funeral Home in Brighton with Pastor Dave Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Hook Cemetery near Brighton. Open visitation will begin at 3:00 P.M. Monday with the family present from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday evening. A memorial has been established to the Brighton Volunteer First Responders.
