Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, pg. 10.Sam DOVICO Jr., 84, of Batavia, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at home.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kremer Funeral Chapel in Batavia, with the Rev. David Albert officiating. Interment will be in Batavia Cemetery, with military rites conducted by O.B. Nelson American Legion Post No. 3 and Walter B. Schafer Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 775 of Ottumwa.
Open visitation will begin at noon Friday at the chapel where the family will be present from 7-8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Mr. DOVICO was born Feb. 25, 1922, near Abingdon, the son of Sam and Virginia Passalacqua DOVICO. He married Evelyn PRATT Jan. 13, 1946, in Fairfield.
Mr. DOVICO was raised and educated in Jefferson County. He attended Crosslane County School and graduated from Batavia High School in 1942. He was a self-employed truck driver. He owned and operated a grain buying and selling business, did custom combining and corn shelling for area farmers and operated a gas station with his brothers.
Mr. DOVICO was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific, Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines.
Mr. DOVICO was the commander of the W.C. Harness American Legion in Batavia for many years and was a former member of the Batavia Lions.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Larry DOVICO and wife Judy, Jerry DOVICO, Gary DOVICO and wife Lois and Terry DOVICO, all of Batavia; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary DOVICO of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jim and Joe DOVICO.
