Leonard “Smiley” Charles Bekel, 80, of rural Brighton, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at his home following a battle with bone cancer.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Wayne Wilkens officiating.

Family visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the family and sent to 50 N. Cromwell St., Fairfield 52556.

Mr. BEKEL was born Oct. 2, 1926, at home in Germanville, the son of Lloyd and Marie ARMSTRONG BEKEL. He married Mildred CLARK June 1, 1950, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Fairfield.

Mr. BEKEL lived on the family farm where he was born his entire life. He was a life-long farmer and also worked as a security guard at Acco-Babcock, retiring several years ago. He was U.S. veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Teresa BALLEW and husband David of Fairfield, Rhonda WELLBORN and husband Ed of Aurora, Colo., and Kevin BEKEL of rural Brighton; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Velma KELLER and Thelma ECKWALL.
