"Fairfield Ledger", Dec. 13, 1893, Pg. 3, Col. 4

DEATH OF DANIEL RIDER. Capt. Daniel RIDER, a resident of Jefferson County since 1846, died at his old home four miles northwest of this city Friday afternoon, after many years of declining health.

Mr. RIDER was born in Fayette County, Penn., November 28th, 1808, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Ann McCALL, who died in 1872, in January, 1832, in Washington County. In early manhood he took a prominent part in the politics of his native state, was three times elected to the lower house of the legislature, served as postmaster of his native town, as an appointee of President Jackson, and was a deputy United States marshal. When he located in Fairfield, he became connected with the real estate and banking house of HENN, WILLIAMS & Co., taking for his labors the entering of public lands. On one of the tracts which he is said to have located, Sioux City now stands, while the tract on which he spent nearly all his life in this county and on which he died, was secured by him directly from the government. After a few years of active business life, Mr. RIDER retired to his farm, where the remainder of his life was spent. He was a thorough and progressive farmer, and as a fruit grower and bee keeper, two branches to which he dovoted particular attention, he was peculiarly successful.

He was the father of seven children, three of whom now reside in this county -- Thomas M. and Henry RIDER and Mrs. Madison BLACK. Capt. RIDER became connected with the Lutheran Church shortly after his removal to Fairfield and retained his membership until death came.... The funeral occurred Saturday afternoon and the remains were interred in this city. Rev. M. L. Melick conducted the services.
