After Years of Suffering.

Elizabeth A., wife of David HUDGEL, died at her home four miles north of this city Monday evening, after six years' illness from cancer. Mrs. HUDGEL was the eldest child of the late Eli HOOPES, a pioneer settler of Jefferson county. She was born in Belmont county, Ohio, and her age was sixty-three years, seven months. The family came to Jefferson county in 1850, and the daughter was married to David HUDGEL in 1853 (sic - 1859). Only one child was born to them, W. D. HUDGEL, now living in Fairfield township. Other surviving members of her family are the Messrs. O. T., John T. and E. D. HOOPES of this city. Mrs. HUDGEL was a most estimable woman, and she discharged her duties to her family and to society in the fullest measure. In the portions of the county where her life was spent she was greatly loved and admired for her womanly excellences, and a wide circle of friends will join the bereaved family in mourning her loss. The sympathy of the community will go out to the husband and loved ones upon whom this blow has fallen. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church, with whose congregation Mrs. HUDGEL had long been identified, this morning, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. A. Boatman, and were largely attended. The body was laid at rest in the Evergreen cemetery.

Note: Buried in Lot 1st.040. Husband David died in 1915 and was buried with her. Some uncertainty exists with her year of birth, as her gravestone notes a birth date of December 18, 1831, while her obituary states she was 63 years old, which would put her birth year at 1833. Her sister Mary Jane was born in August, 1833, and census ages for 1860 and 1870 lean more toward 1831 being the correct birth year. It would not be out of line for the newspaper to state an incorrect age for a person, or give a guess as to a person's age, especially when the event occurs prior to the requirement of keeping vital records in the state.
