"Fairfield Ledger", Feb. 8, 1889, Pg. 3, Col. 3

DEATH OF MRS. HOOPES.

Mrs. Eliza (THORNBERRY) HOOPES, a lady with large acquaintance among the older people of Jefferson county, died at the home of her son, E. D. HOOPES, two miles east of this city Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. HOOPES attained her 81st year January 31st, and had been in failing health for several years, her physical condition gradually failing with increasing age.

She was a native of Pennsylvania, but came to Iowa from Monroe county, Ohio, with her husband, Eli HOOPES, whose death occurred 21 years ago. She was the mother of nine children, three of whom are dead, one son losing his life in the great war. Of the six surviving children Oliver T., John, E.D., and Mrs. David HUDGEL live in this county, while Charles makes his home in Nebraska and Mrs. R. H. KNIGHT in Kansas. Mrs. HOOPES has spent nearly half a century in this county, and few women had a wider acquaintance or more friends. Her life was one which was well spent, and she has reaped the reward of her labors. The funeral occurred this morning at 11 o'clock from her son's home, and the remains were laid by the side of her husband.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: She is buried in Old Fairfield City Cemetery, Lot #150 with Eli, and Charles' wife Frances J. McCLAIN HOOPES; in neighboring Lot #1 are Oliver T., his wife Iowa E. CHANDLER HOOPES, and four of their children.
