HENRY V. DOWNS DIED THIS MORNING

Henry V. DOWNS, a well known resident of this city passed away at three o'clock this morning at his home on South Main street. Mr. DOWNS has suffered occasionally from gall stones for the past fifteen years but was apparently in good health until last Thursday when he was stricken with a severe attack, which caused his death. He is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. Walter BEAN of Fairfield; Mrs. Jennie SPRATT and Charles, Joe and Harry DOWNS, all of Lew Van, Saskatchewas (sic), Canada.

No funeral arrangements have been made.

DOWNS FUNERAL AT 2:30 TOMORROW

The Funeral services for H. V. DOWNS will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter BEAN, 401 E. Adams street. Rev. Mosser will conduct the services. Interment will be made in the Evergreen cemetery.

H. V. DOWNS BURIED THIS AFTERNOON

The funeral services for the late Henry V. DOWNS were held this afternoon from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter BEAN. The service was in charge of Rev. H. A. Mosser and interment was made in Evergreen cemetery.

He passed away quietly at 3:15 a.m., March 24th, 1919 after an acute illness from gall stones from which he suffered four days previous. Mr. DOWNS was a public spirited citizen, always interested in the welfare of the community and his death will be regreted by a wide circle of friends.

Henry Vincent DOWNS was the son of John and Jennie DOWNS of Mercer county, Penn. He was at his death almost 69 years of age, having been born September 16, 1850. He was one of eight children and is survived by five sisters and one brother, Mrs. Margaret MAXWELL, Bellefontaine, O., Miss Sue DOWNS, Benhaven, Pa., F. H. DOWNS, Bellefontaine, O., Mrs. John McKIRHAN, Northwood, O., Mrs. Milligan CREIGHTON, Belle Center, O. Two sisters, Mrs. John SPEER and Mrs. Cyrus JOHNSON had preceeded him im death.

In early manhood he came to Jefferson county, Iowa and located in Fairfield and has remained in this county ever since.

On May 1877 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth CRAWFORD at Fairfield, and to this union were born six children, Charles, William, Ray, Harry and Mrs. Clarence SPRATT all of Lew Van Saskatchewan, Canada and Mrs. Walter BEAN of Fairfield. One child, Margarete, died at the age of three years.

His parents' family had long been connected with the United Presbyterian church and Mr. DOWNS has been a faithful member and generous supporter of it ever since his youth. He was treasurer of his church in Fairfield and was a member of its board.

After his marriage he was employed at the Fairfield city water works. He spent eight years on a farm south of Fairfield. Later he was in charge of the Fairfield Creamery. About 1911 he moved to Fairfield and began the manufacture of ice cream in this city. He continued in this business until poor health compelled him to dispose of the business and retire.

Mr. DOWNS made two trips to Ireland for the purpose of completing the settlement of the estate of the CRAWFORD family. He had planned to spend this summer with his children in Canada.
