WILLIAM D. CARTER DIED ON TUESDAY.

William D. CARTER died yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at his home on East Briggs street after an illness of three weeks from a complication of diseases. He was one of the best known men in Fairfield and this part of Jefferson County and his death will be sincerely mourned by his many friends.

William D. CARTER was born in Henderson county, Illinois, June 20, 1852, and grew to young manhood there. He came with his parents to Jefferson county, locating on a farm four miles north of Fairfield. On March 5, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel OSBORN, and they resided on a farm north of this city until about four years ago, when Mr. CARTER moved to Fairfield, hoping to rest and thus benefit his failing health. To Mr. and Mrs. CARTER were born eight children, one of whom died in infancy. Mrs. CARTER and seven children survive. They are, Charles O., Earl E., Harry and Clifford, and Miss May, all of this city, Mrs. C. H. GUSTISON, who resides north of Fairfield, and Mrs. Frank LIBLIN of Princeton, Ill. Mr. CARTER also leaves two brothers, J. B. CARTER of this city and L. G. CARTER of Mankato, Kansas.

Mr. CARTER was never a seeker after public office, although he very creditably filled several offices in Buchanan township during his younger days. He was a member oft he (sic) Christian church of this city. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at three o'clock at the residence on East Briggs street. Rev. G. W. Burch of the Christian church will conduct the services. The interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.

(An old Funeral Register at the Raymond Funeral Home shows Wm. D. Carter was born in Illinois, son of Henry Carter, born Ohio, and Lucy Sprague.) Henry B. & Lucy Sprague Carter are buried in Old Fairfield City Cemetery.
