Edward G. FLIGG, Former Grocer, Taken In Death

Edward G. FLIGG, former Fairfield resident and longtime grocer in this community, died about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday in Northwest Hospital in Des Moines.

His body is at the Weston Behner Funeral Home where last rites are pending.

A native of Fairfield, he and Mrs. FLIGG moved to Wesley Acres, a Methodist retirement home in Des Moines in June, 1968.

FLIGG was associated with the grocery business in Fairfield for 44 years. He started his career in 1899 when he went to work for the late Charles Herring whose business was located on the west side of the square.

FLIGG bought out Herring in 1929 and later moved the business to 104 W. Burlington. The store remained at that location until FLIGG's retirement in 1943.

He is one of the oldest members of the United Methodist Church and held a number of important posts both on the local and state level. He served as a member of the board of directors at Wesley Acres since its establishment in 1947 until shortly before his moving to the home.

Survivors include his widow who is a resident at Wesley Acres; one son, Harold, Fairfield; and two grandsons.

FLIGG Funeral Will Be Friday

Funeral services for Edward G. FLIGG, former Fairfield resident, will be held Friday at the United Methodist Church.

The services will be at 2 p.m. with the Rev. George Dimmitt, Des Moines, and the Rev. Wilson Hyde officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The Weston Behner Funeral Home will be in charge.

Death came to Mr. FLIGG Tuesday at Northwest Hospital in Des Moines where he had been a patient since last Friday.

Edward G. FLIGG, 87, was born May 25, 1883, in Fairfield, the son of Charles E. and Belle HENDERSON FLIGG. He was reared and educated in Fairfield and lived all his life in this community until moving to Des Moines in June, 1968.

He entered the grocery business in 1889, purchased his own store in 1929 and retired from the business in 1943.

He remained quite active in other fields following his retirement from the retail business. He helped organize USO drives in various communities, helped establish the pension fund for the Methodist Clergy in South Iowa, and was associated with Iowa Wesleyan College in fund raising programs.

FLIGG was one of the oldest members of the Methodist Church, joining the church in 1899; he was a member of Fairfield Rotary and the Fairfield christian Businessmen's Association.

He was married to Madge MURDOCK Nov. 27, 1901, who died May 1, 1951. To them were born four children, one of whom survives. He is Harold FLIGG, Fairfield. Those deceased are Lois, Keith and Robert.

On May 14, 1952, he was married to Verda GAUMER who survives. Following the death of Mr. FLIGG's son, Keith, Mr. and Mrs. FLIGG brought the two grandsons to their home and cared for them until they were both through high school.

Mr. and Mrs. FLIGG have been residents of Wesley Acres, a Methodist retirement home in Des Moines, since June, 1968.

Survivors include son, Harold; two grandsons, Robert, San Diego, Calif., and Alan, Inglewood, Calif.; and three sisters: Mrs. Stan BREWINGTON and Mrs. Nellie BOUGHNER, both of Fairfield, and Mrs. Helen MAXWELL, Davenport. He was preceded in death by two brothers, one of them a twin.
