OBITUARY

MRS. MALINDA HEALD

Mrs. Malinda Frances HEALD, 92, died at 11 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, in Battle Creek, Mich., where she had resided since coming to Battle Creek with her daughter, Miss Florence HEALD, in 1920.

Until she contracted pneumonia three years ago, Mrs. HEALD had been unusually active for a person of her advanced age, both in her home duties and church work at the Seventh Day Adventist Tabernacle. Since her illness, however, she had failed gradually and had been bedfast for the last four weeks after falling at her home and injuring her knee. Death was attributed to the infirmities of old age.

At the age of 89 years, Mrs. HEALD had completed a five-year period of perfect attendance at the Seventh Day Adventist Sabbath school, which included also daily Bible study and being on time at each meeting, a remarkable accomplishment for a woman of her advanced years.

Mrs. HEALD's life was a life of unusual activity and usefulness, and her home was always open to persons in need. Both while she was living in Iowa and since coming to this city she had frequently taken needy folk into her home and cared for them over extended periods of time.

Born July 2, 1843 in Mitchell, Ind., Mrs. HEALD was the daughter of James and Elizabeth GRAMMER. She was the last of the 11 children, six boys and five girls, in her immediate family. Five of her brothers served with the Union army during the Civil War.

When she was 11 years old she moved with her parents to Fairfield, Iowa. She was married there on April 11 1861, to John HEALD, who preceded her in death, Dec. 30, 1914. His death occurred in Nevada, Ia, where her son, Dr. C. W. HEALD, was superintendent of Nevada Sanitarium. Following her husband's death Mrs. HEALD returned to Fairfield, where she resided until coming to Battle Creek in 1920.

At the age of 15, Mrs. HEALD united with the Christian church and three years later became a member of the Seventh Day Adventist denomination which faith she had since followed. Besides the Seventh Day Adventist church, Mrs. HEALD was a member of the Dorcas society, in which she was active until three years ago, and a charter member of the Three-Quarters Century club.

Mrs. HEALD is survived by her two sons, Dr. C. W. HEALD, of 67 Oaklawn avenue, a member of the Sanitarium medical staff, and Dr. John HEALD, former member of the Sanitarium staff who recently entered private practice; three daughters, Miss Florence HEALD, who has cared for her during her illness, Mrs. Emma BISHOP of Chicago, and Mrs. E. E. GARDNER, of Columbus, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Mary, died at the age of three years.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Willams and Braden chapel in Battle Creel, with Elder Taylor G. Bunch, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist church, officiating. Following the rites here the body was taken to Fairfield, Iowa, where committal service was held at 2 p.m. Monday at the grave. She was buried in the family lot in Evergren cemetery, beside the body of her late husband.
