JOHN SHELMAN FUNERAL IS HELD

John W., son of William H. and Pernina (Watson) Shelman was born Feb. 2, 1858, in Nodaway county, Mo., coming to Iowa in a covered wagon at 4 years of age.

He departed this life April 1, 1949, at the age of 91 years 1 mo. and 29 days. On December 29, 1881, he was united in marriage to Sarah P. Coltrane. To this union were born two sons and six daughters. All of his life was spent in Round Prairie and Hillsboro communities. He and his wife having enjoyed 54 years of married life before her death on Feb. 6, 1936.

He was baptized and united with the Christian Church in June, 1889, later transferring his membership to the Round Prairie Baptist church remaining a faithful member until the end.

Preceding him in death were his wife, two daughters, Edie L., at 17 years of age and Lillie in infancy, his father and mother, four brothers, Miles L., Louis G., Harvey, Jesse B., three sisters, Nannie M?????wait, Emma Farmer and Sadie Clark.

He leaves to mourn his passing two sons, Otto R. and J. Louis, four daughters, Alta M. (Heckenberg), Elsie C. (Crane), Maudie I. (?), Lela M. (Crane) and one sister, Mrs. Maggie Conard, 22 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Since the death of his wife he had made his home with his youngest son Louis and wife.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 3, 1949, at Round Prairie Baptist church with the pastor, Rev. Calvin Huether, officiating. "I'll Go Where You Want Me To Go," "He's the One" and "God Be With Me Till We Meet Again", were sung by Mrs. Jay Barton and Mrs. Clarence Mickey, accompanied by Mrs. Ivan Byczek. The following grandsons served as casket bearers: Glenn and Marshall Cochran, John and Orval Heckenberg, Carroll and Vincent Crane. Burial was at Hickory Grove cemetery.
