FIRST DEATH AT NEW HOSPITAL.

James COWEN (sic - COWAN), 83, first to be claimed by death in new institution.

(From Wednesday's "Daily" [sic - October 30th]) Yesterday occurred the first death at the Jefferson County Hospital, when James COWAN, age 83 years, passed away at about 6:00 o'clock p.m. Mr. COWAN is a resident of Libertyville and was received into the hospital a few days ago suffering from heart disease in its advanced stages, and death has been hourly expected from the time of his arrival....

An undocumented clipping in possession of a COWAN descendant, Mrs. Hazel E. (MILLER) MICHLER, 631 NE 39th Terrace, Kansas City, Missouri, 64116, which, from the style of type, may have been printed in the "Jefferson County Republican" --

OBITUARY. Libertyville, Ia., Oct. 30. Mr. James COWAN died in the Jefferson County Hospital, October 29, 1912. He was born April 11, 1829, at Irvin, Pa.... He came to Libertyville, Iowa, in 1852 from Pennsylvania. He has been twice married, his second wife living at Allerton, Iowa.

He leaves to mourn his loss one sister, Mrs. C. B. SMITH of Norristown, Penn., and two brothers, C.T. of Spokane, Wash., and W.E. of Libertyville, besides an adopted daughter, Mrs. Anna WARNER of Denver, Colo....

Mr. COWAN was drafted (Oct. 6, 1864) for the war, but only went as far as Keokuk, where he was taken sick and entered the hospital. When he recovered he returned home. (Discharged 29 May 1865 at Davenport, Iowa) Member Presbyterian Church... His funeral will be held at the Presbyterian Church Friday at 1 p.m., conducted by Rev. Hinkhouse of Fairfield. Interment in Fell Cemetery. "Uncle Jimmy" as he was known by everyone, will be greatly missed.

ANSWERED FINAL ROLL CALL. James COWAN died in the Jefferson County Hospital, this city, Oct. 29...

Born in Westmoreland Co., Penn. Apr. 11, 1829, and grew to manhood there.... Resided near Libertyville continuously until the death of the wife May 9, 1897. He was again married to Amanda DOUGHERTY who survives. He was a soldier of the Civil War, but was never assigned to company or regiment.....
