Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. PEEBLER celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary at their home in this community, Dec. 26th, quietly. Both are in good health for their age and are quite active about their home.

Mr. and Mrs. PEEBLER are among the real pioneers of Jefferson County. Mr. PEEBLER was born in this county in 1842 and has lived here ever since. His wife came to Jefferson County with her parents in 1848 being only four years of age. They lived on farms within half a mile of each other and grew up together.

Mr. PEEBLER's parents first came to Iowa in 1840, but the Indians who then controlled the country refused to let them settle here and they were forced to return to Illinois. In the following year they returned and took up a homestead of 150 acres where the Boy Scout swimming pool now is located, at Fairfield. (In 1972 a ball park). The old house still stood there until a few years ago. At that time there was no town of any size within miles, the counties were not named, except in a few cases, and the Indians controlled the land. Mr. PEEBLER's father died when S.C. was an infant only six weeks old and he was raised by a sister and helped with the farm work from early childhood.

The three children of Mr. and Mrs. PEEBLER all live in the Batavia community. They are Mrs. Anna CREMER, Mrs. Nora ISRAEL and John W. PEEBLER. Mr. and Mrs. PEEBLER were farmers all their lives until their retirement a number of years ago.
