Wilma COCHRAN WEST of Fairfield will be celebrating her 90th birthday Sunday.
Mrs. WEST requests no gifts, but cards or memory notes can be sent to 505 W. Stone Ave., Fairfield 52556.
Wilma Evelyn COCHRAN WEST was born May 11, 1924, in Chambersburg, Missouri. She is the oldest of six children born to Archie and Bertha PRUETT COCHRAN. Her siblings are Ronald COCHRAN, Robert COCHRAN, Lois WIXOM, Twila HARPER and Jeanie SATORI.
She started school in Farmington and graduated in the class of 1942 from Revere High School. During high school, she developed a love for playing basketball. She showed her family she "still got it" by shooting hoops at a family gathering at the age of 82. She continues to enjoy watching college and professional basketball games.
Mrs. WEST worked at the Shaeffer Pen Company in Fort Madison as a machine operator for 5.5 years during World War II. Later, she worked for two years at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown.
She and her husband Homer have traveled extensively across the United States through his employment as a construction superintendent. After his retirement, they took their 1929 Chrysler, often bringing home first-place and best-in-show awards.
Mrs. WEST has two daughters: Lana COX of Davenport, and Sharon WEST of Fairfield. She has one son Ronnie DAVIS, deceased. She also has two stepsons: Jake and Jeff of Davenport; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. WEST is an active member of Pleasant Plain Friends Church. She was honored with the Eliza Armstrong Cox Award, the highest honor in USFWI. She taught Sunday school for seven years and was an active leader of crafts for children for 40 years.
She collects and cuts postage stamps for missionaries and collects used clothing to be distributed to South Dakota American Indians. Her hobbies include quilting, sewing and spending time with her family.
