State of Ohio, Perry County, ss:
On the 18th day of Dec., A.D. 1850, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace... John SHEWARD aged 65 years, a resident of Somerset, Perry Co., Ohio, who being duly sworn declares that he is the identical John SHEWARD who was the 1st Sergeant in the company commanded by Capt. Ezekiel F. Chambers in the war with Great Britain declared by the U.S. on 18th June 1812; that he volunteered at Chestertown, Kent County, Maryland, and continued in actual service for about three years (?) and was honorably discharged... He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled... Charles Elder, J.P.(John SHEWARD served under Capt. E. F. Chambers, 1st April 1813 to 13 May 1813, also from 4 Aug. 1813 to 25 Aug. 1813. BLWt. 34085 issued Dec. 13/51. 40 A. [Believe this last translates to Bounty Land Warrant number, and 40 acres of land. -JS])
